Linux

Stupid XP!

After I shuffled a bit of hardware between my computers, I ended up the Asus A7N8X Sempron 2400 as the server with a 120 gig drive and the ECS K7S5A Athlon 2000 with the 160 gig drive (which used to be in the old workstation PC) will now be the current workstation.

On the 160 gig drive I had the main Win XP os, with a 50 gig partition for Suse. So my first instinct, knowing that after changinc MoBo, the OS won’t work, I threw in the WinXP CD and attempted a recovery (which re-writes all your windows files, but maintains all the settings/programs you had).

No avail. I would get about 1/2 way into the “Detecting Devices” progress bar, and it would hang there. I had the machine ON overnight while it was hanging with 33 min remaining… Stupid XP! I have to blow it away and reinstall from scratch, but not before I get a chance to copy my settings from the old XP install.

So all of yesterday was spent using Linux (on both the server and workstation machine). And I love it! And I even got Dreamweaver MX to work (with Wine)! I just have to remember to NOT turn the firewall ON on a remote machine while I’m connected to it through VNC. It will shut you out!

#SuSEfirewall2 stop will stop the firewall, and allow access again.
