Linux is pretty exciting!
The linux fun continues…
Started a few months ago, by installing SuSE 9.3 on my aging PIII 650 laptop. The idea was to learn a little about how it works, to move my file/media server away from being Microsoft dependant.
After several installs/re-installs, got a version that worked. The reason for the re-installs wasn’t due to the computer. The problem was always between the keyboard and chair.
But after a few spurts of interest for about a week, I lost interest.
In the last weekend of Nov, I decided to get back into all things linux, and make use of the 700Mhx Athlon CPU+MoBo I had laying around. Bought a HD and a case, slapped an existing video card in there, and voila: one usable computer.
I decided to do an FTP install of the OS, and went with the latest OSS SuSE 10.0 which had been out for a while.
Don’t know how long it actually took to install (‘cus I did it before I went to bed) but in the morning , 2.31 gigs of OS (and select programs) had been installed.
A few days later I managed to kill the system, and in an act of desperation reinstalled (again an FTP net install) SuSE 10.0
A few more days later, same thing. Killed the system, and did another reinstall. If only I had spoken to Goni before re-installing. Oh well… live and learn.
Now, I’m on the 4th install of SuSE 10.0 and it’s been quite solid for the past few weeks.
I’ve been learning a handfull of things every time I use it. It’s quite a different environment from Windows, and the more I use it, the more I realize that I can’t think on ways I would do something in Windows… because it just frustrates you more then anything, since there is no similarity on how things are done.
Current challenge is getting a network drive to be accessible to more users then just root.
And I still have to figure out the sound system side of things, so I can get the machine to do what I am setting it up for. File and media server. The file server side is easy. Pretty much have that fully working. It’s the audio that’s causing some headaches.
